of baluster form, the foot bordered with a row of upright lappets rising to a bulbous body applied with a crisply moulded undulating leafy peony scroll, narrowing to a waisted neck further decorated with three peony sprigs below the ribbed trumpet mouth, thickly covered overall in an even brilliant bluish-green celadon glaze
48.5 cm., 19 1/8 in.

狀況報告
There are three sections of restoration to the mouthrim, each about 3 inches wide, two of which were broken and restuck, one rebuilt. Almost the entire mouthrim has been painted over. There is some minor crackling to the glaze on one side of the foot. Pre-restoration photographs are available upon request.

This vase is notable for the crisp and naturalistic rendering of the peonies which elegantly scroll around the body of the vase, and for the luminescence of the glaze. A larger vase of this type in the Palace Museum, Beijing, is illustrated in Longquan qingci, Beijing, 1966, pl. 41; and vases with their mouths reduced, in the Topkapi Saray Museum, Istanbul, are published in Regina Krahl, Chinese Ceramics in the Topkapi Saray Museum, vol. 1, London, 1986, nos 204 and 205. Smaller and simpler examples have been found on a shipwreck off the coast of Sinan, South Korea, datable to approximately the third decade of the 14th century, and were included in the Special Exhibition of Cultural Relics Found Off Sinan Coast, Seoul, National Museum of Korea, 1977, cat. no. 23.

Longquan wares with moulded and applied decoration first appeared in the late Song dynasty and were produced in large quantities during the Yuan. They were assembled in sections and instead of having a base, their bottom section was closed with an inverted saucer-shaped piece of clay. Compare a similarly shaped yenyen vase from the Percival David Foundation, and now in the British Museum, London, inscribed with the date corresponding to 1327, illustrated in Margaret Medley, Yuan Porcelain and Stoneware, London, 1974, pl. 58.

Baron Kondo Renpei was one of the founders of the Mitsubishi Group, president of Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK Line) and Kirin Brewery Co. Ltd. 1837-1927. He was awarded the title of Baron by Emperor Meiji in 1911 in recognition of his distiguished services to the development of the marine transportation trade in Japan. His wife was from the Matsudaira family, related to the tea master and daimyo of the Matsue domain, Matsudaira Fumai.

Censers of this type were made during the Southern Song and Yuan dynasties. Examples have been found in a Song stratum at Quanzhou in Fujian province, which at the time was the main port for overseas trade. A piece from a Yuan tomb, also at Quanzhou, is illustrated in Longquan Qinci, Beijing, 1966, pl. 23 bottom, and another larger example from the Shanghai Museum is illustrated ibid., pl. 50. Other published examples include one in the Idemitsu Museum of Arts illustrated in Song Dynasty Ceramics, Tokyo, 1979, pl. 19, which is quite similar in shape, but of smaller size; one of similar size and shape in the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco, illustrated by He Li, Chinese Ceramics, New York, 1996, p. 158, no. 271, dated Southern Song dynasty; a slightly smaller example illustrated by R. Krahl, Chinese Ceramics in the Meiyintang Collection, vol. 1, London, 2001, p. 303, pl. 568, dated Southern Song or Yuan dynasty. Others are in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Hakutsuru Art Museum, Japan; the Ardebil Shrine; and the Toyko National Musuem.

mid-14th century
China

Developed at the Longquan kilns in the late thirteenth century, this type of vase was produced there well into the Ming dynasty (1368–1644). The decoration of molded peonies is an innovation of these kilns, and is frequently found on works produced there in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The large size of this type of vase suggests that it was used in public spaces such as temples and reception halls.

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 204

A FINELY MOULDED LONGQUAN CELADON YENYEN VASE
YUAN DYNASTY, 14TH CENTURY

The baluster body is well moulded with a wide band of lotus blooms borne on scrolling leafy vines, above overlapping upright leaves, the tall trumpet neck with a smaller lotus scroll below concentric bands rising to the flared mouth rim, the celadon glaze of an attractive blue-green tone (hairline at base)
17 3/4 in. (45 cm.) high, box

拍品專文
The present vase is unusually small, as most vases of this design are considerably taller. The decoration on the larger vases are also sprig moulded and applied onto the body under the glaze, whereas the design on the present lot has been moulded on the vase, giving it a softer and more subtle appearance. However, like the other vases, the recessed base is formed by the Yuan technique of inserting an inverted dish through the base cavity so as to accommodate any movement during the firing process, thereby successfully maintaining the shape of the vase.
