Literature

The handle on this Victorian gentleman’s walking cane is shaped and carved from the horn of the African white rhinoceros ( Ceratotherium Simum ). Grey in colour, the white rhinoceros is remarkable for its straight lipped mouth which is responsible for the description ‘white’. This is a derivation of the Afrikaans word ‘weit’ meaning wide lipped. It has the longest horn of any of the species which can grow as long as 1.5 metres. Ninety three percent of all the remaining 8400 white rhino are in South Africa.
