We have sought to record changes in the condition of this piece acquired after its manufacture.
-losses to the color pigments; some pigments have been later refreshed.
-residue of earth encrustations, particularly to the foot
-some chips and nicks to edges and rims
-a few short cracks to the mouth rim and foot rim.
-some minor areas of touch-up

The jar is carved on the body with two triple bow-string bands, and is flanked by a pair of taotie mask and fixed-ring handles. The conical cover is molded with mountain peaks interspersed with figures and animals surrounding a central peak. Both are covered with olive-green and amber glazes.

-small chips to the raised elements to the mountain

Vessel:
-the entire exterior of the surface appears to be covered in a later coating
-small flakes to glaze
-surface encrustation most notably surrounding one handle
-chips around the foot
-hairlines possibly from production to where the foot joins the body

Compare the similar jar and cover, of comparable height (23 in.), in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco illustrated by He Li in Chinese Ceramics, A New Comprehensive Survey, New York, 1996, p. 70, no. 53. Jars of this type were made in imitation of painted black lacquer prototypes that were encircled by metal bands and had metal mounts at the mouth and foot rims.

Like many early ceramic shapes, the shape of this storage jar is based on more expensive bronze and lacquer prototypes. The wide mouth, the articulated rim, and the amber glaze of this example help date the piece to the Eastern Han dynasty.

高21.2厘米、口径9厘米、底径10厘米
汉代在长江以南包括今广东、广西、湖南、江西、福建、浙江和江苏南部等地广泛流行硬釉陶器，用当地一种密度较大、粘性较强的粘土制成，与灰陶相比烧成温度更高，陶质更坚硬。有的硬陶上往往有一层薄薄的釉，或黄或绿，烧成温度很高，属于青釉的系统。这件陶壶，颈上刻一圈水波纹，腹部有两圈凸雕弦纹，其身上涂有青黄色釉，是一件当时较典型的南方硬釉陶器。
