这件乾隆白芙蓉雕送子观音,用整块白芙蓉石精雕而成,质地细腻,柔润如脂,色泽甜净雅致,秀丽夺人。观音作游戏座,脱俗飘逸,一手持经卷,一手拈念珠,微微颔首,眉目含笑,慈悲可亲。衣纹流畅优雅,衣缘处作海水纹镶边,衣上团花中有碧波莲花,精美异常。旁又一童子作合掌拜观音状,笑容可掬,天真喜人。观音及童子头发及衣服花纹皆用阴刻涂墨,细致明晰。寓意吉祥,工料俱美,十分珍贵。芙蓉石为寿山石品之一,产于加良山的顶峰,石质柔而细,微透明,光滑洁润。陈子奋《寿山邱石小志》赞:“芙蓉之质与色,直可与田黄冻石雄峙寿山。”芙蓉石以白色为典型,其它尚有黄、红等色。白色者,名“白芙蓉”,质极细嫩,有白玉白、猪油白、藕尖白几种。黄色者,名“黄芙蓉”,或牙黄,或朱黄,通明妩媚。红者,娇艳夺目,光彩焕发,名“红芙蓉”。此外还有淡青色,名“芙蓉青”。白地晕红色点者,名“花红冻”。近代龚纶《寿山石谱》称:“温润凝腻,山坑之石无其比。名曰芙蓉,岂以类初晓之木芙蓉花耶!” 清乾隆后,“将军洞芙蓉”渐著名于世,至光绪间,“白芙蓉”已不可得,被誉为“邱石三宝”之一。此送子观音像有“玉璇”款,“玉璇”即杨璇,又名杨玑,字玉璇,一作玉璇,福建漳浦人,清康熙年间以治印钮为世人所重,或说曾被招为内府御工。杨璇刀工精绝,擅雕人物、走兽,风格雄强古雅、拙朴浑穆,毛奇龄《后观石录》赞其所雕葡萄钮印章“独取其白色而略渗微红者为枝叶,其叶中蠹蚀处,各带红黄色,深浅相接,如老莲画叶然。且嵌缀玲珑,虽交藤接叶,而穹洞四达,真鬼工也”。北京故宫博物院藏有杨玉璇所雕鼠瓜钮印章一枚,呈椭圆形,用高山石,高7厘米,宽4.5厘米,白、黄、红三色相间。印顶红色部份刻南瓜三颗,数片白色瓜叶及藤丝交错其间。黄色部份刻松鼠一对,口衔小虫在瓜上追逐。背面阴刻草书“玉旋”款,充分利用石材天然形态颜色,因材施艺,构思巧妙,刀法纯熟。还有一件田黄石观音像,利用一块呈桔皮黄色、通透秀润的田黄冻石,刻带冠观音立像。观音右手提飘带,左手执瓶,脚踩波浪,冠顶及缨络嵌宝石珠,眉发染墨,端庄慈悲,风采卓然。

此件材质选用寿山石中名贵品种白芙蓉,观音神情安详,体态婀娜,给人以祥和之感。衣冠服饰随风飘动,雕工精湛,所刻画的观音动静皆备,卓然袅袅。身后阴刻“玉璇”款。

杨玉璇,又名玉祥、玑。明末清初福建漳浦县人。“能以寸许琥珀作玲珑准提,毫发毕露,见者惊奇。”善于寿山石雕,镂刻不同形象和姿态的人物、鸟兽、鱼虫、花卉、树木等等,无不形态逼真,栩栩如生。尤其擅长雕刻观音。

We have sought to record changes in the condition of this piece acquired after its initial manufacture.
The figure is in overall good condition.
There is the expected minor loss to the pigment in gilding, however the gilding of the mark is intact.
There are a few very minute nicks to the edges of the robe and sleeves.
There is a small bruise to the lower edge of the robe at front, to the big toe, and a small one to the edge of the robe above the proper right knee, as visible in the illustration.
The base is pierced with two small holes for mounting, and has light surface scratches as well as a network of fissures.
There is also some faint writing in western script on the base, possibly reading Chou Pun in two places.

Zhou Bin, also known as Shang Jun, was a native of Zhangzhou in Fujian province. He is most famous for his seal carvings, luohan figures and, occasionally, seal paste boxes. It has also been suggested, though not conclusively proved, that he originally studied under Yang Yuxuan and later worked as an Imperial craftsman in the Palace workshops of the Kangxi Emperor.
The delicate treatment of the facial features is characteristic of Zhou’s works, as is the meticulous treatment of the robes with masterful carved details on the hems.

the warm cream-coloured stone carved in the form of Guanyin depicted seated regally, with the right foot partially exposed and the right leg raised supporting the hands, one of which is holding rosary beads, her face rendered with a serene expression below neatly drawn back hair and a tall cowl, dressed in long flowing robes cascading into voluminous folds with the chest exposed, the hems of the robes and cowl bordered with finely incised scrollwork, ruyi and dragon bands, the fabric further depicted with soaring dragons and phoenix, the reverse incised with a four-character inscription reading Zhou Bin bai zhi, resting on an oval dark mahogany-brown and red soapstone base delicately incised with a stylised border within a floral diapered frieze, the detail picked out in black and red pigments

the figure wearing loose-fitting robes, seated with his left hand holding a scroll and leaning on a sack decorated with lotus, his right hand resting on his bent right knee, signed to the back with two characters Zixiu, the Shoushan stone of a cream tone with russet inclusions and smooth patina, set on a pitted rockwork base in a toffee tone

狀況報告
There is a 3 mm chip to the right index finger. There are also some minor nibbles to the ears and a tiny nick to the left thumb. The base has a 2 cm chip beneath the sack. Apart from some minor surface scratches, the overall condition is quite good for its delicate design.

Chinese carvers rarely signed their work and to find a piece with the maker’s name signifies the patronage he enjoyed in this form of art. Although a number of figural carvings can be found signed by the carver Zixiu, little is known about him. For a detailed discussion of the possible dating of Zixiu’s works see Gerard Tsang and Hugh Moss, Arts from the Scholar’s Studio, Hong Kong, 1986, pp. 160 and 162, where a lohan figure is illustrated, pl. 135, together with another figure, pl. 136, both bearing the signature ‘Zixiu’. Zixiu’s carving style is generally recognizable by the execution of the faces, the detailed carving of facial hair and the use of pearls and pale turquoise glass beads for decoration. For further examples of his work see a seated figure of a lohan sold in these rooms 30th October 2000, lot 261 and later sold again in these rooms 8th October 2010 lot 2209, from the Water, Pine and Stone Retreat Collection. Another figure of a lohan sold in our London rooms, 13th May 2009, lot 9.

For further examples of soapstone figures see those carved by a contemporary of Zixiu and member of a group of carvers who produced soapstone figures of this type called Zhou Bin. A finely carved figure of a seated lohan signed by Zhou Bin in the National Museum of Chinese History, Beijing, is illustrated in Zhongguo wenwu jinghua daquan: Jin yin yu shi juan, Hong Kong, 1994, p. 83, pl. 242; and another was included in the exhibition In Scholar’s Taste, Sydney L. Moss Ltd., London, 1983, cat. no. 123, where this type of soapstone carving is discussed. See also a group of three soapstone figures, from the collection of Sir Hans Sloane which entered the British Museum, London, on his death in 1753, published in R. Soame Jenyns, Chinese Art. The Minor Arts II, London, 1965, p. 270, pl. 182. Jenyns, ibid., p. 270, notes that one of the pieces illustrated, either the seated lohan with the begging bowl or the one standing must be Sloane’s ‘Chinese idol with pott (sic)’ which he acquired before 1718.

此尊观音以寿山石而制,与同类品相比已属大器,殊为珍贵难得。形象俊美而脱凡,其挽高椎髻,额际高阔,面庞圆润,双目垂敛,神态沈静而慈祥,法相饱满。头戴风帽,身披襌衣,袖侧饰有「佛」字样,裙裾自然散落周身,褶皱随形轻盈。盘腿屈膝而坐,左手置于左膝之上,右手揽抱一小童坐于其右膝,童子张书展卷喜笑颜开。拍品雕刻技法以圆雕为主,刻画观音送子的立体感与仿生貌,间或辅以浅浮雕等于其上篆饰图样,雕工细腻精湛,纹饰于细微之处尽见精妙。观音乌发丝缕清晰,二人衣饰边纹均缀祥云、莲花等,底座面刻钱纹,侧面以祥云为地,其间均饰开光,内绘瑞兽纹,布局繁密紧凑,颇为精彩。寿山石作为「中国国石」、「万石之王」,收藏历史大致可追溯到宋代,梁克家在其著作《三山志》中就说到,宋代寿山石开始大量开采并用于雕刻,大者为达官贵人陈列于几案欣赏,小者则为文人雅士手中的玩赏品,足见石品之优。拍品选石古朴光润,蕴质如玉,以观音送子为主题,将中国民间传统文化与石雕艺术完美融合。整像雕工精湛,全身比例均匀,写实细腻,衣纹流畅飘逸,人物表情生动传神,与底座相配更显卓雅,实为寿山石雕精品。来源欧洲重要藏家旧藏

A RARE FINELY CARVED TIANHUANG FIGURE OF A LUOHAN AND SOAPSTONE STAND

the tianhuang masterfully carved in the form of a luohan seated on a separate base rendered in variegated red soapstone in the form of jagged rockwork, the figure portrayed seated upright in a relaxed manner and holding a handscroll in his right hand, further depicted with a cheerful expression accentuated with thin upturned lips, adorned in loose robes gilt-decorated with clouds and floral motifs and finely detailed hems embellished with tiny beads, the details on the garment meticulously picked out in gilt, incised with a Shangjun mark
overall 7.8 cm, 3 in.; tianhuang 55.39 gr.

Overall very good condition with a few light scratches and typical wear to the gilding. Some inlays have been reinforced, possibly replaced. It is drilled at the bottom to be securely placed on the stand. The stand has a later added peg and expected nibbles to the extremities.

CATALOGUE NOTE

This magnificently carved tianhuang figure is signed by one of the great carvers of the 17th century, Zhou Bin, zi Shangjun, a native of Zhangzhou in Fujian province. According to Gerald Tsang and Hugh Moss in the catalogue to the exhibition Arts from the Scholar’s Studio, Fung Ping Shan Museum, University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, 1986, p. 86, the early soapstone master carvers are set apart by one key feature: every figure is conceived as an individual work of art. This characteristic is evident in the present carving, which is notable not only for the outstanding piece of tianhuang it has been fashioned from but also in the careful and sensitive consideration of his facial expression and details to convey his spirit and individuality, as well as the masterfully conceived robes which fall naturalistically around his body. The golden hue of the precious stone further imbues this figure with a sense of vitality and wisdom, while the soapstone stand with its openwork carving provides a pleasing contrast to his smooth contours.

Fang Zonggui in Shoushanshi zhi [Records of Shoushan Stone], Fuzhou, 1982, pp. 77-78, notes that Zhou’s works were always prized in artistic circles and that he used the Chinese painting concept of xieyi (‘idea painting’) in carving landscapes, flowers, pines, and bamboo. Amongst his carvings are a series of small figural sculptures, usually seated on elaborate cushions or rockwork bases, of which several have survived; see a tianhuang carving of Maitreya, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, published in Zhongguo meishu quanji [The complete collection of Chinese art], vol. 6, Beijing, 1988, pl. 158; and a figure of Guanyin in a grotto, included in the exhibition Arts from the Scholar’s Studio, op. cit., cat. no. 165, together with a soapstone luohan, cat. no. 44, sold in these rooms, 4th April 2012, lot 136.

Other carvings by Zhou include a luohan fashioned in stone, in the National Museum of History, Beijing, published in Zhongguo wenwu jinghua daquan: Jin yin yu shi juan [Complete series on the finest cultural relics of China: gold, silver, jade and stone volume], Hong Kong, 1994, p. 83, pl. 242; and a baifurong figure of Maitreya, sold at Bonhams Hong Kong, 25th May 2011, lot 208.

The figure is shown seated with one leg crossed in front of the other, exposing one bare foot, and with one hand holding a rosary resting on a raised knee. She is dressed in long, loose robes incised with phoenixes in flight amidst foliate decoration that fall in folds around the body. The hair is finely incised and stained with brown pigment, and pulled up into a tall chignon beneath a loosely draped cowl. The back of the robe is incised with a phoenix in the upper section and a dragon roundel in the lower section, and is inscribed Zhou Bin bai zhi (made by Zhou Bin). The figure is attached to a separately made, oval soapstone base of dark reddish-brown color.

The figure is carved standing on a later base of swirling waves, holding a scroll in her right hand and rosary beads in the left. She wears long draping robes that are incised and gilt with patterns and inlaid with gems. There is a serene expression to the face, with the eyes downcast. The stone is of pale honey-brown colour with reddish inclusions.

说明 说明:观间直立,左手捻珠串,右手握书卷,书卷上阴刻海浪纹,观间身着宽袍,重褶层叠,飘然欲动,衣边阴刻荷花蔓枝于波浪之上,观音面色含蓄祥和,双耳垂肩,发髻高耸,荷叶发冠紧箍,头巾覆盖,衣袍上的纹饰阴刻线内苍金细致,其头发、双眼,眉毛则填墨勾勒,鞭蓉润如脂,色淡似凝乳,为芙蓉中上品。清代初期是寿山石雕的昌盛时代,雕刻名家层出不穷,民间著名的石雕艺人有杨璇、周彬、魏汝奋等,他们寿山圆雕的技艺达到了登峰造极的境界,宫廷也收藏了不少这些名家的精品。此件拍品当为同时代的精品。

观音以寿山白芙蓉石雕制而成,呈坐姿,石质滋润细腻,犹如脂玉,温润剔透。观音身穿云纹宽袍法衣,呈半跏趺坐,身形端庄,脉脉衣褶流畅优美,长裙覆足,其发髻高耸,面形丰满圆润,双耳垂肩,慈眉晗目,嘴角带着祥和的一丝笑意,似俯视芸芸众生。观音双臂居左前拢,左臂枕在一条独足瑞兽探出,面目狰狞,形象怪异。右手玉指纤纤,持握经卷,神态安祥文静,妙相潇逸。其精雕细琢,集圆雕、浮雕、线刻等多种雕塑手法表现,造型端庄秀丽,雕镌细致生动,别有一番韵味,极具收藏价值。

观音菩萨以上佳寿山石为材,石质温润致密,立体圆雕而成。菩萨面颊丰满,眉眼细长,身罩披风,下身着裙,呈游戏坐,神态安逸肃穆,法相庄严。其身微微左倾,左边立一小香炉,轻烟袅袅,烟雾升腾形成如意般形状,构思巧妙,技艺精湛。运刀流畅犀利,所雕衣带飘逸,极富动感,袈裟宽领处细琢花纹,并描以金色,披风之下露出下裙,裙上暗刻之花纹若隐若现,十分精致。披风背面阴刻如意云纹,并落背刻「玉璇」行书款。下承台座,座上描金满绘缠枝花纹。座背面阴刻「弟子玉璇拜手沐浴敬造 康熙丁亥岁次吉旦」。杨玉璇,名玑,字玉璇,生卒不详,约活动于康、雍、干时期,福建漳浦人。以善制「圆雕人物」闻名。所作多为贡品进献宫廷,民间流传甚少。本件石雕人物神情刻划精致细腻,形神兼备,细节淋漓尽致,足见制作者之深厚功底。
