A RARE CELADON-GLAZED INCISED ‘LOTUS’ ARCHAISTIC SQUARE VASE
QIANLONG INCISED SEAL MARK AND PERIOD

the tapered square body rising to a waisted neck and lipped rim, each corner applied with a stylised kui dragon handle, each side of the body finely incised with dense scrolling foliage bearing large lotus blossoms, all between bands of pendant ruyi heads and lappet borders, the neck similarly incised with upright stylised floral motifs, applied overall with a lustrous sea-green glaze thinning along the edges and pooling to a darker tone within the incised design, the base with an incised six-character seal mark

Height 23 cm, 9 in.

The vase has a hairline glaze line that runs along both sides of one handle but does not meet at the upper section. There is a shallow 0.4 cm wide glaze flake to the rim.

This vase is remarkable for its pleasing proportions, watery celadon glaze and subtly incised floral scroll. It encapsulates the prevailing taste at the Qianlong court for porcelain that adapted familiar forms and combined them with novel designs. The facetted shape and four dragon handles were inspired by archaic bronze vessels of the Eastern Zhou period (770-256 BC), while its incised feathery scroll is strongly indebted to French Rococo. The craftsman who made this piece successfully adapted the somewhat austere archaic bronze shape to the sophisticated taste of the Qing court by diminishing the size of the four handles and incising the body with a luxuriant scroll.

Vases of this unusual form and incised with a floral scroll are rare. A vase of similar form but with an incised floral scroll rendered in gilt, formerly in the Robert Chang Collection, was included in the exhibition Important Chinese Ceramics from the Robert Chang Collection, Christie’s London, 1993, cat. no. 113, then sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 27th April 1993, lot 246. Compare also with a pair of reticulated vases of related form but larger size, similarly fashioned with four dragon-shaped handles on the neck and decorated in famille-rose enamels against a celadon ground, sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 29th May 2007, lot 1370.

For the prototype of this form, see a bronze fanghu with large dragon handles at the four corners, attributed to the 4th century BC, unearthed in Pingshan, Hebei province, and illustrated in Zhongguo qingtongqi quanji, Dong Zhou [Complete Collection of Chinese Bronzes. Eastern Zhou], vol. 9, Beijing, 1997, pl. 154.

The glaze on this Qianlong vase is a fine copy of early Ru ware. In the Qianlong reign Song dynasty stonewares, particuarly the crackled wares of Ge, Guan, and Ru-type were highly regarded by the emperor. Not only did the emperor collect Song dynasty examples of Ru wares, he also commissioned new porcelain with a similar glaze from the imperial kilns.

Few vases of this large size and shape are published. However, one of similar size and shape with a Ge-type glaze was sold at Christie’s New York, 21 September 2004, lot 315. Qianlong-marked blue and white vases of this form appear to be more common. A slightly smaller vase of the same form decorated in blue and white was included in the exhibition, The Wonders of the Potter’s Palette: Qing Ceramics from the Collection of the Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong, 1984, pl. 63; and several sold at auction, two at Christie’s New York, 1 June 1990, lot 247, and another example sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 4 November 1996, lot 770. Another comparable hu-shaped vase with upright rather than flared mouth rim, decorated with similar floral scrolls, is illustrated in Blue and White Ware of the Ch’ing Dynasty, Book 1, National Palace Museum, Taipei, 1968, pl. 3.

Other vases with Song-type glazes usually have a facetted, hexagonal shape like the Yongzheng vase with Guan-type glaze in the Palace Museum illustrated in Monochrome Porcelain, The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, vol. 37, Hong Kong, 1999, p. 226, no. 204. However, the potter who made the current vase managed to throw and fire the vase successfully without restorting to strengthening vertical joins. It is another archaistic aspect of this vessel’s design that it is based upon a metalwork shape, evidenced by the tubular handles, and also the sharp junction between the shoulder and the body of the vessel. Interestingly, there is a small vase in the Baur Collection, the profile of which shares the current vase’s sharp shoulder junction, which is illustrated by J. Ayers and M. Sato (eds.), Sekai toji zenshu, vol. 15, Qing, Tokyo, 1983, p. 111, no. 121. The Baur Collection vase does not have the tubular handles but has been adapted from that of ancient bronze vessels. The current vase whilst having a shape that refers to ancient bronze forms, is undecorated so as not to detract from its beautiful glaze based on Song dynasty wares.

Prince Henri of Orleans, Count of Paris was the Orleanist claimant to the throne of France from 1940 until his demise in 1999. The Count of Paris spent many of his formative years in exile in Morocco before returning to France in 1950 after the law of exile was rescinded.

Much of the collection inherited by the Count of Paris came directly from his royal ancestors, members of the House of Bourbon. It is likely to have been the Duke of Orleans, or his cousin Prince Henri of Orleans, the two great explorers of the family, who brought the current vase back from their travels. The family spent several periods in exile and during the Second World War the collection was sent to be housed in London, Morocco and Belgium. After the end of the war the collection was returned with Henri, 2nd Count of Paris to the family in France.

Yongzheng vases of this large size are extremely rare and the current vase stands out as an exceptional example of the Yongzheng adaptation of the Song dynasty Ru glaze.

Few Yongzheng examples of this shape have been published and they are usually found in a paler crackled grey Guan-type glaze such as the Yongzheng-marked example of the same form in the Tianjin Arts Museum, included in the Exhibition of Chinese Treasures of 5000 Years, Cultural Relics from Tianjin City in China, Japan, 1985, illustrated in the Catalogue, no. 44. Compare also a smaller square-section Guan-type vase in the Zande Lou Collection of similar inspiration but without the splayed foot or everted mouth found on the present vase, included in the exhibition, Qing Imperial Monochromes, the Zande Lou Collection, Chinese University of Hong Kong, illustrated in the Catalogue, pp. 56-57, no. 11. A Yongzheng-marked Guan-type vase of the same form but slightly smaller in size, was sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 2 May 1995, lot 100; and again, 10 April 2006, lot 1614. Another slightly larger Guan-type example with more pronounced stained crackling was sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 27 April 2003, lot 174.

Ru glazes have traditionally been much admired by Chinese connoisseurs, and were copied on porcelain as early as the 15th century. Excavations at the imperial kilns at Jingdezhen have revealed that Ru-type glazes were being made for the Ming imperial court. In 1984 a porcelain bowl with inverted rim and Ru-type glaze was excavated from the Xuande stratum at the imperial kilns published in Imperial Porcelain of the Yongle and Xuande Periods Excavated from the Site of the Ming Imperial Factory at Jingdezhen, Urban Council Hong Kong, 1989, pp. 276-7, no. 97. The imitation of this revered glaze became even more popular at court in the 18th century under the Yongzheng and Qianlong Emperors.

The Yongzheng emperor appears to have had particular admiration of these Ru wares and a number of vessels from his reign were made with fine Ru-style glazes. It is possible that the copy of Song dynasty Ru ware glazes made for the Yongzheng emperor was devised by the greatest of all the supervisors of the Imperial Kilns, Tang Ying, who first came to the kilns as resident assistant in 1728. Tang Ying was especially known for his highly successful imitation of early wares. Indeed the Jingdezhen tao lu notes that: ‘His close copies of famous wares of the past were without exception worthy partners (of the originals); and his copies of every kind of well-known glaze were without exception cleverly matched …’ translated by R. Kerr in Chinese Ceramics – porcelain of the Qing Dynasty 1644-1911, London, 1986, p. 20.

YONGZHENG SIX-CHARACTER SEAL MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1723-1735)

HKD 8,000,000 – HKD 10,000,000

Xu Shichang was a key political figure in the history of early modern China. He passed the civil examinations and became a jinshi in 1886. Xu was appointed a position at the Hanlin Academy of the Qing government before being promoted to Governor of the Three Northeast Provinces. Later Xu became President of the Republic of China (Beijing government) from 1918 to 1922 but after retiring from office he lived in Tianjin where he focused on the scholarly pursuits of painting, calligraphy and poetry.

The elegant form of the current vase was greatly influenced by early Ming blue and white moonflasks such as the two examples in the collection of the National Palace Musuem, Taipei, illustrated in Blue-and-White Ware of the Ming Dynasty, Hong Kong, 1963, Book II, Part 1, pp. 38-41, pls. 9-10c. Yongzheng vases of this form and large size are very rare and the current vase stands out as an exceptional example of the Yongzheng adaptation of the Song dynasty Ru glaze. A very similar Ru-type glazed vase of this shape but slightly larger in size (57 cm.) was sold at Sotheby’s London, 12 July 2006, lot 131. A related Yongzheng Guan-type moonflask with an incurved garlic mouth (52.7 cm. high), was included in the exhibition Etheral Elegance: Porcelain Vases of the Imperial Qing, The Huaihaitang Collection, Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2007, pl. 31.

The Yongzheng Emperor appears to have had particular admiration of Ru wares, and a number of vessels from his reign were made with fine Ru-style glazes. 20.

Vases of this shape, with a subtly compressed body and an elegantly flaring, slender neck, were produced in the Qianlong reign in a variety of monochrome glazes. For a vase of similar shape covered in a crackled, pale lavender-blue glaze, from the Collection of J.P. Morgan, see S. Bushell and W. Laffan, Catalogue of the Morgan Collection of Chinese Porcelains, New York, 1907, no. M24; later included in the above exhibtion at Marchant & Son, London, no. 30, p. 44.

Another Qianlong-marked vase of this same, distinguished profile, covered in a flambé glaze, is illustrated by R. Krahl, in Chinese Ceramics from the Meiyintang Collection, Vol. IV (II), London, 2010, p. 367, no. 1812.
