A FINE AND VERY RARE CINNABAR LACQUER BRACKET-LOBED DISH
YUAN/EARLY MING DYNASTY, 14TH/EARLY 15TH CENTURY

The interior hexafoil medallion finely carved with the Eastern Jin poet Tao Yuan Ming inspecting chrysanthemum within a walled garden beneath tall wutong and pine trees, while attendants prepare a tray of food within an elaborate terraced pavilion, the lobed cavetto carved with a composite floral scroll, the lipped rim with a diaper pattern border, the exterior with a deeply carved swirling classic scroll, contained within each of the six brackets exposing the layers of black lacquer, the lobed foot corresponding to the shape of the rim, the base lacquered brown and inscribed Zhang Cheng zao, ‘Made by Zhang Cheng’

The wood box is inscribed and signed Kanamori Sowa (1584-1656), a well known tea master of the Edo Period.

This dish can best be compared to another exhibited in the Royal Scottish Museum, and published by Sammy Lee, Catalogue of the Collection of Chinese Lacquer, 1964, no. 5; and again by Hu Shih-Chang, Chinese Lacquer, National Museums of Scottland, 1998, no. 11. On both this and the present example, the finely detailed pavilions with open-work screens and elaborate roof and eves, as well as the composite floral scroll in the cavetto and eight-pointed rosettes within the diaper pattern on the rim and ground, all support an earlier Yuan date.

Compare also to a five-lobed dish with a Zhang Cheng mark to the base, with a similar diaper pattern border to the rim illustrated by Lee Yu-Kuan, Oriental Lacquer Art, Tokyo, 1972, fig. 101.

A hexafoil dish, bearing a Yongle six-character mark, depicting a literary scene with the scholar Zhou Mao Shu in a related pavilion looking out at a lotus pond, is included in the Hong Kong O.C.S. Exhibiton catalogue 2000 Years of Chinese Lacquer, 1993, no. 41.
