狀況報告
We have sought to record changes in the condition of this piece acquired after its initial manufacture.
The upper storey that would have fit on top of the brush tray is now missing. There would have been a pair of doors to enclose the long drawers, which is now missing. The tops of some of the posts of the balustrades have been replaced, and the corners of the roof have been restored. There are minute chips to the edges and to the raised decoration, with areas of touch up.

A similar ‘incense box’ dated to the middle of the Qing dynasty, in the collection of the Shanghai Museum is illustrated in Zhongguo Qiqi Quanji, vol. 6, Beijing, 1993, pl. 217. See, also, the similar example sold at Christie’s New York, 22-23 March 2012, lot 1709. Both of these examples had a cover in the shape of a roofed upper storey, that is now missing from the present box.

狀況報告
The upper tier of the roof may be a replacement made from lacquer pieces of the same period. There are scattered losses and touchups throughout. Some crackling to the blue ground in the ‘windows’. Two finials suspended from the upper roof and three metal balustrade posts are missing, some with associated breaks. General other scattered nicks and wear.

A nearly identical incense box (48.8 cm. high), dated to the middle of the Qing dynasty, in the Shanghai Museum collection is illustrated in Zhongguo Qiqi Quanji, vol. 6, Beijing, 1993, pl. 217. (Fig.1) See, also, a superbly carved red lacquer temple-form cabinet (48.3 cm. high) sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 30 May 2006, lot 1265. Like the present box, the cabinet contains several drawers within the structure which are hidden by a pair of ornately carved lacquer doors.

佛龛在清宫佛堂中占有显要位置，也是官式建筑和宗教建筑造型的缩影，因此每个细节均设计严谨，如屋顶的式样、装饰纹样等都一一有所规定，其中重檐歇山顶的使用等级制度更加森严，只有五品以上官吏的住宅正堂才能使用。此件佛龛以黄花梨制作而成，用料优良，纹饰繁复，华丽优美，丰富有层次，极具灵动气韵，实属不易。其歇山顶结合了直线和斜线，上半部分为悬山顶或硬山顶样式，下半部分则为庑殿顶的样式，在视觉效果上给人以棱角分明、结构清晰的感觉。现存世佛龛多藏于北京故宫、承德避暑山庄等处，如此件者难能可见。
