– an area of loss to the mouth of the vase held in the proper left hand
– a few small opaque bruises to the chignon and forehead
– minute chips to edges of the hem and to the base
– 9.2.1955 is inscribed in red ink on the base
– expected rubbing to the grisaille, expected surface abrasion and light scratches

A STANDING SOAPSTONE FIGURE OF ZHANG GUOLAO
18TH CENTURY
The Immortal is finely carved with a long beard and a smiling expression and wears a scholar’s cap above pendulous ears. His long flowing robes are incised with dragon roundels, Xi characters and fruiting peach. He holds a large bamboo drum in his hands. Traces of pigment remain. The stained hexagonal soapstone stand is incised with rectangular cartouches enclosing stylised waves, lotus, clouds and a dragon and is further embelished to one side with a pierced jade florette.

The Immortal stands with a fly-whisk in his left hand and a sword slung over his back. His long flowing robes are incised and inlaid in gilt with lotus and cloud scrolls. His facial features, hair and beard are picked out in black and red enamels. Details of his headdress, robe and shoes are covered in green and red enamels.
