Of irregular shape, the sides are carved in relief with three chilong, one grasping a lingzhi sprig in its jaws.

A FINELY CARVED JADEITE PENDANT WITH BEADED CHAIN
The elongated pendant is intricately carved and pierced in the form of a gnarled tree trunk entwined by vines issuing dense lingzhi-heads with a small chilong clambering on one of the scrolls. The stone has tones ranging from brilliant apple-green to pale whitish green and darker spinach-green. It is set with a chain with green and brown beads.

Dr Nancy Hsieh, New York, acquired in Shanghai in the 1930s

Lot Essay
An identification report from the Gemological Institute of America confirms that the present lot is natural green jadeite.

The scroll weight is carved in relief to either side as a stylised dragon with its head turned back over its body, its details finely incised. The stone is of a dark celadon and russet brown tone with cloudy inclusions.

The stone is slightly lighter in tone in the photograph.
There are natural fissures to the stone and areas of russet inclusions. Partial old paper label to the side, only partially legible, reading “XX 1.4756 A XX”.
