– There is some expected light wear to the mouth rim.
– There is some light glaze degradation to part of the shoulder.
– There is a very shallow chip to bottom of foot that is associated with the manufacturing process and some kiln grit adherence.

This globular jar is decorated with a deeply cut floral scrolling design typical of the high quality ceramic wares from the kilns of north China in the Northern Song dynasty. It is characterised by the effective use of multiple overlapping petals which create rich surface texture. A similar use of multiple overlapping petals can be seen on early Northern Song vessels decorated in the scraffiato technique from the Cizhou kilns, such as the famous vase in the Freer Gallery of Art (illustrated in Sekai Toji Zenshu, vol. 12, Song, Tokyo, 1977, pp. 109-110, no. 109). Floral scrolls with similar petals can also be seen on Ding wares, such as those on the shoulder of a vase excavated in 1969 from the foundation vault of the Jingzhisi Pagoda at Dingzhou, Hebei province, which is dated to AD 977 (illustrated in Complete Collection of Ceramic Art Unearthed in China, vol. 3, Hebei, Beijing, 2008, no. 98).

This style of carving is, however, particularly effective on Yaozhou wares because their green glaze is transparent and pools in deeply cut areas, creating a dichromatic effect on the high and low sections of the carved decoration. This was also a style of floral scroll which effectively complemented the globular forms, such as the current jar. A similar scroll can be seen on a globular Yaozhou ewer in the Shaanxi History Museum (illustrated in Complete Collection of Ceramic Art Unearthed in China, vol. 15, Shaanxi, Beijing, 2008, no. 113). A Yaozhou jar in the collection of the Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka, of similar shape and size to the current jar, is also decorated with a floral scroll including slender overlapping petals (illustrated in The Masterpieces of Yaozhou Ware, Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka, 1997, p. 31, no. 34).

Oxford thermoluminescence test no. P114n70 is consistent with the dating of this lot.

The inscription, mei jiu qing xiang, may be translated, ‘excellent wine, clear and fragrant.’
The same inscription can be seen carved in relief in panels on a jar of this shape with cover illustrated by J. Ayers, The Baur Collection, Chinese Ceramics, vol. I, London, 1968, A 108. It is also on an ovoid jar illustrated by R. Krahl, Chinese Ceramics in the Topkapi Saray Museum, Istanbul, vol. I, London, 1986, p. 371, no. 537; and on a meiping in the Victoria and Albert Museum illustrated by R. Kerr (ed.), Chinese Art and Design: Art Objects in Ritual and Daily Life, New York, 1991, p. 167, no. 73, where the author notes, p. 164, the inscription may be a trademark.

拍品專文
Longquan vases of this form, undoubtedly inspired by contemporaneous metal ware, are exceptionally rare. The Palace Museum in Beijing has a very similar vase, illustrated in Ceramics Galleries of the Palace Museum, Part II, Beijing, 2008, p. 373, pl. 290. Another smaller vase without the moulded decoration is in the British Museum, illustrated by J. Harrison-Hall in Ming Ceramics in the British Museum, London, 2001, p. 474, pl.16:33 where the author mentions the unusual roll-up mouth with bosses might have taken its inspiration from the Tibetan brass and copper ewers. Another example with a carved rather than moulded primary decorative band was sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 29 May 2007, lot 1472.

The application of sprig-moulded ornaments on Longquan celadons developed during the Yuan dyansty. This technique involved the manufacture of separate ornaments in open moulds and then applied to the clay body before glazing and firing. Incising and moulding in relief were the most common techniques used individually or in combination as seen on the present lot.
