Condition Report
Overall in very good condition. The shade is executed in a highly aquatic glass selection with striated blue and green rippled glass comprising the background. The goldfish are executed in a combination of striated orange and iridized “tortoise” glass, which capture both the texture and vibrant coloration of the fish scales. The shade with approximately 20 hairline cracks dispersed throughout, which have been recently stabilized by a professional glass conservator. The rare “Turtle-Back” base is in very good condition and displays a rich brown patina. The bronze surfaces with scattered minor surface scratches, abrasions and light wear to the patina consistent with age and gentle use. The base with some extremely minor traces of oxidation and light surface soiling to the recessed contours of the design. The Turtle-Back tiles appear to be original and entirely undisturbed and display rich jewel-tone iridescence when viewed firsthand. With a replaced socket, and with a later reproduction finial in very good condition. A superb example of this exceedingly rare model work displaying an exceptionally artistic glass selection and a highly desirable base pairing.

Catalogue Note
The present “Fish” lamp synthesizes two of Louis Comfort Tiffany’s greatest passions: the natural world and Eastern aesthetics. A symbol of wealth and abundance in Chinese culture and of perseverance, inner strength and prosperity in Japanese culture, goldfish not only held great symbolic appeal, but the portrayal of a live animal in constant, fluid motion was an ideal subject for Tiffany’s naturalistic, impressionistic approach.

The motif of fish swimming in water was one that Tiffany explored in some of his most important early landscape and figural windows. Though it was seldomly seen within the firm’s leaded glass shades, the motif represented in this format is incredibly successful. Designed by Clara Driscoll, Agnes Northrop and Alice Gouvy just before the turn of the century, the foremost distinguishing feature of the present shade is its superlative glass selection. The rich blue background passages executed in striated, rippled glass creates a strongly aquatic quality. When viewed with remitted light, the glass perfectly emulates the effect of light passing through water. The goldfish, which swim amid seaweed vines, are depicted in vibrant orange and iridized “tortoise” glass, imitating the texture of fish scales. In the upper register of the shade, transparent and blue-green cabochons are arranged with naturalistic irregularity, representing bubbles rising to the water’s surface. Depicting this subject in the round, able to be viewed from 360-degrees, is evocative of viewing fish in a fishbowl. The “Turtle-Back” base offers a more abstract organic visual complement to the shade, promoting the strong naturalism of the unit.

Overall very good condition. The turtle-back tiles all appear original and undisturbed. The turtle-back glass is intensely iridized as shown in the catalogue illustration. When seen with remitted light the iridized tiles present with a bright light orange hue with deeper red-orange accents. The bottom hinged door with inset Turtle-Back tile appears original and undisturbed. The bronze surfaces present with a rich brown and green patina. The bronze with some light surface soiling, surface scratches, abrasions, and minor rubbing to the patina throughout consistent with age and gentle handling. The coiled wire decoration with some very minor and light traces of oxidation and white residue in the recessed contours, not visually detractive. The elaborately decorated wall plate is original and is highly complementary in form and decoration to the pyramidal-shaped lantern, and presents with some minor traces of oxidation on the contours adjacent to the applied wire decoration. The socket appears original and undisturbed. A rare form with finely articulated detailing and a beautiful glass selection.

Overall very good condition. One Turtle-Back tile in the upper right corner of one facade with a small and tight hairline measuring approximately 2 inches long, stable. The Turtle-Back tile on the bottom door with a small area of restoration measuring approximately 1 x 2 inches consisting of a resin infill where the tile had been chipped. The resin is colored to be well-matched to the tone of the Turtle-Back. The caming surrounding the leaded glass panels with some occasional areas of minor bending to the edges. The lantern with some light surface soiling throughout consistent with age. The bronze surfaces with scattered minor surface scratches, abrasions, small discolorations and minor areas of corrosion. The upper ring and canopy appear to be original and display with more concentrated corrosion. A rare and impressively-scaled lantern that presents with vibrant coloration and strong visual presence. When viewed with remitted light, the Turtle-Back tiles appear a soft teal blue – a very rare and unusual color for Tiffany’s Turtle-Back series. The tiles are beautifully iridized, and when seen with reflected light display with a range of luminous jewel-tone hues.

Overall very good condition. When viewed in person the shade presents beautifully, with slightly more subdued blue tones compared to the catalogue illustration and with a nice range of opalescent background tiles and vibrant cadmium yellow and yellow-orange daffodil blossoms. The shade withapproximately 9 cracks to the glass tiles dispersed throughout. The shade with very light surface soiling to the adjacent contours of the shade leading.

The shade with minor rubbing to the patina and some oxidation throughout. The rare “Turtle-back” base is in overall very good condition. The bronze with scattered surface scratches and abrasions consistent with age and gentle use, and with a few occasional small and minor casting flaws, not visually detractive. The bronze with traces of oxidation to the recessed contours of the design and with scattered minor discolorations consistent with age. The Turtle-Back tiles present with intense jewel-tone iridization and are in very good condition. The socket and paddle switch appear to be period. With a period heat cap with scattered surface scratches and abrasions. A superb and harmonious shade and base pairing, displaying a highly artistic and thoughtful glass selection to the shade, and outstanding rich coloration to the base.

Overall in very good condition. The shade with approximately 20 cracks to the glass tiles dispersed throughout. There is some minor separation to the shade leading just below the top row of geometric glass tiles. (This is quite common in larger shades and is the result of the stress endured over time by the weight of the shade pulling down from the upper bronze shade ring. While the leading and glass in this area is stable, if desired the leading could be further stabilized with conservation.) The shade with surface soiling along the recessed contours of the leading and to the recessed contours of the rippled glass comprising the upper and lower borders. The exceedingly rare base is in beautiful original condition. This base was in the possession of the historic Tavern Club from 1905 to 2004, and by all accounts all of its components are original and undisturbed. The favrile mosaic glass ornamenting the lower register of the base all appears to be intact and undisturbed. The favrile mosaic glass with some occasional edge wear and small minor surface flecks, and with surface soiling to the recessed contours of the original grouting. There are eight large “Turtle-Back” tiles ornamenting the upper register of the base. All of these tiles appear to be original and undisturbed, and are in very good condition with no visible damage or cracks. With minor surface soiling to the perimeter borders of each tile. These tiles are beautifully iridized on the exterior and when viewed with reflected light display a strong range of luminous color. When viewed with remitted light from the electrified base these tiles emit a deep emerald green glow. The patinated bronze surfaces of the base display an exceptionally rich russet brown and green patina. The bronze surfaces with some occasional surface scratches, abrasions and rubbing consistent with age and use, and with surface soiling to some of the recessed contours of the design. At present there is a small gap of space between the outer perimeter border of the shade and the ends of the shade arms. If desired this gap could be minimized by having a Tiffany conservator mechanically adjust the shade arms slightly higher, which would allow for a tighter fit between the two components. As expected, the interior contours at the end of each shade arm with minor rubbing to the patina from surface contact over the years with the shade. The removable socket cluster is fitted with six upper sockets to illuminate the shade, and one interior socket facing downward to illuminate the base. Three of the exterior socket casings appear to be old period replacements (they display a slightly different configuration), while all of the other sockets appear to be original and undisturbed. Two of the exterior sockets are slightly bent from their top backings but are fully functional. (If desired the latter could be easily remedied by a Tiffany conservator). All of the paddle switches appear to be original and undisturbed, as well as the bronze pull chain which controls the interior base socket and the small round bronze fastener which secures the socket cluster unit in place. The upper socket cluster arms with some minor abrasions and associated patina losses. On the underside of the base, three of the small screws securing the base plate are missing (the base plate is however entirely stable). The period finial with a few very minor and shallow surface bruises to the perimeter lower edge. Displaying one of the most quintessential shade and base pairings ever conceived by Tiffany Studios, this lamp stands as a masterwork with great visual impact and presence. The glass selection of the shade is remarkably thoughtful and artistic, displaying a spectacular range of heavily saturated and beautifully mottled glass throughout. The deep cobalt blue glass utilized throughout the background passages, as well as the rich green border glass, is beautifully complemented by the glass selection and color palette of the base.

CATALOGUE NOTE
The present “Peony” shade was purchased from Sotheby’s New York in 2005 paired with an exceptional “Jeweled” base, now being offered by itself in lot 229. One auction season earlier, the Geyer Family had purchased at Christie’s New York one of Tiffany’s most iconic and spectacular bases, the “Mosaic and Turtle-Back” tile model, which originated at the Tavern Club, a private gentleman’s club in Cleveland, Ohio, where it was paired with a “Geometric” shade and displayed on the library table of the main lounge. The lamp was given to the club by a member in lieu of payment of dues in 1905, and remained the property of the club until its sale in 2004. However, not only was the shade battered from years of lighthearted abuse by the members, but the lamp’s presentation was a radical juxtaposition of price and quality. The base model, recorded in the 1906 Price List as model number 355 and priced at $300, was considerably more expensive than the majority of available shades. Ordinarily paired with the firm’s most premium large-scaled lamp shades, such as the “Hanging Head Dragonfly” (such a lamp is in the collection of The Art Institute of Chicago), or the extremely rare “Landscape” (a famous example was sold at Sotheby’s New York, The Mecom Collection, April 22, 1995, lot 66), the Geyer Family set out to create the quintessential unit and united this sumptuous “Peony” shade with the Tavern Club base.

Peony–the Flower of Prosperity, Honor and Romance

This magnificent Peony shade must have been executed in the Women’s Glass Cutting Division headed by Clara Driscoll, since she and her “Tiffany Girls” had the prerogative to make all leaded glass shades with floral subjects. In all probability Driscoll herself designed it, since that was her responsibility and privilege. Although she did not refer to this model in her many years of correspondence with her family, she designed it before October 1906 since the model (number 1505) is cited in Tiffany Studios’ 1906 Price List.

With its lush, overblown blossoms, the Peony shade is one of the firm’s largest and richest designs, offering a wonderful opportunity for the selector to enrich the composition with a wide range of red glass ranging here from pink to red to deep crimson and purple. This example is particularly rich, not only in color but also in its varied types of mottled and rippled glass, and this may well be due to the fact that it was made early on in production, when greater care was given to each object. The so-called dash-number tag inside the shade suggests that it was the thirty-seventh example of this design, a measure of its great popularity. Its popularity was due not only to its colorful floral beauty but also to certain practical concerns: its generously sized dome, almost two feet wide, allowed great quantities of light to radiate out. Unlike many of the Tiffany Studios lamps that were more decorative than functional, this model provides ample light for reading. It is not surprising, then, that in 1910, when there was a general retrenchment in Tiffany Studios’ operations and many designs were discontinued, the Peony shade stayed in production and continued to be offered into the 1920s.

Originally, this lamp base supported a Tiffany Studios Geometric shade. The present arrangement, devised by the Geyers, is a splendid and appropriate use of the base. The base is large and assertive, and requires a wide, strongly colored shade. Like a rainbow, the base’s mosaic changes from a deep green at the bottom to deep blue, and the turtleback tiles at the top shift in tone from green to violet, an arrangement that accords with the palette of the Peony shade. Indeed, this lamp base was designed with the idea that it should harmonize with different models of shades; it was not designed for just one. Harmony of colors and materials was a key concern for Tiffany in all the works that bore his name, and this lamp evidences that practicality. Art and commerce could be successfully joined.

Overall in very good condition. The shade with approximately 8 cracks to the glass tiles dispersed throughout. With minor surface soiling along some of the contours of the shade leading and recessed contours beneath the reticulated bronze overlays. The shade displays an exceedingly rare decorated bronze collar over the rim, which strongly contributes to the lamp’s overall presentation. The rare “Turtleback Tile” base is in excellent condition. All of the glass tiles appear to be original and undisturbed. One tile with what appears to be an old shallow small edge chip to the lower right corner, approximately 1/2 x 1/8 inch. The patinated bronze surfaces of the base with minimal surface wear, gentle rubbing to the patina and surface soiling to some of the recessed contours consistent with age and gentle use. There are small areas of rubbing with associated patina loss to the top interior surfaces of the shade arms where the shade has come in contact over the years. As expected the underside of each foot with surface scratches and rubbing. The oil canister displays an early period conversion, and retains a period riser, socket cluster, sockets and paddle switches. A spectacular unit displaying a superb shade and base pairing. The shade with an exceptionally artistic glass selection most notably distinguished by the translucent scarlet red glass to articulate the Poppy blossoms and interesting use of textured granite glass on the shade interior to achieve greater visual interest and depth. The exceedingly rare base displays strong iridescence and color to the four Turtleback Tiles and a rich russet brown and green patina. Please note that the shade has a small early tag impressed TIFFANY STUDIOS/NEW YORK.

不少人對Tiffany燈飾情有獨鍾，對精緻彩繪與吹製玻璃融合在一體的極高藝術成就，多所讚嘆，而造訪過歐洲、尤其參觀過宏偉的教堂，總是對彩繪玻璃散發出的聖潔、古典又美麗的氛圍，深深沈醉。歷經歲月的洗鍊，Tiffany燈飾早已超越實用的功能，深具收藏的價值。

說到Tiffany燈飾，就不能不提Louis Comfort Tiffany，這位美國著名的藝術家及設計師，創作過不少現代裝飾藝術的經典名作，作品素材包括彩色玻璃、檯燈、馬賽克玻璃、吹製玻璃、陶瓷、珠寶、琺瑯、金屬製品等，尤其以彩繪玻璃而聞名於世。1878年，他愛上彩色玻璃，隨後更開設了自己的創作工作室及玻璃鑄造廠。在經過不斷的嘗試後，終於創作了一個充滿古典色彩，名為Favrile的全新玻璃款式，並在1892年取得專利，至今仍蔚為經典。

紐約邦瀚斯（Bonhams）拍賣公司將在2015年12月17日早上10時，公開拍賣一個重要的Tiffany作品私人收藏，總共25件作品全源自於Louis Comfort Tiffany手筆，拍品出自一位美國收藏家，他在過去30年來從各地搜集而來，拍品包括了百年經典鉛框玻璃檯燈以及Favrile 幻彩玻璃花瓶。邦瀚斯（Bonhams）裝飾藝術部門負責人Beth Vilinsky表示：「此次拍賣中每一件Tiffany燈飾拍品，無論從藝術性、色彩和技術方面，皆屬上乘佳作，例如，這位藏家的第一件主要藏品就是這個寶石色調的牡丹檯燈，設計靈感來自於日本非常受歡迎的牡丹花，其色彩之艷麗，工藝之精奇，實屬難得。」
