INTRICATE BURMESE STERLING SILVER REPOUSSÉ ZODIAC BOWL
INTRICATE BURMESE STERLING SILVER REPOUSSÉ ZODIAC BOWL

$783.00
An elegant and intricate sterling silver bowl made with the hand-hammering technique known as repoussé. The bowl displays the various animals of the Burmese zodiac; these creatures are rendered in astonishing detail and are flanked by beautiful hand etched patterns.

The bowl has beautiful hand chasing on the top and bottom borders. It’s a unique piece, every inch completely etched to the smallest detailed pattern. Each zodiac character around the outside of the bowl was done by hand, offering insight into Burmese culture.

It measures approximately 4″ x 4″ x 3 1/4″ and it weighs 4.82 troy oz. There is a hand-etched signature of the Burmese artist on the bottom. Circa 1890 – 1910.

BRITISH INDIAN-BURMESE FIGURAL LANDSCAPE REPOUSSÉ SILVER BOWL

南亚 缅甸錾人物山水纹银碗

$2,382.00
This gorgeous Burmese Silver bowl from the late 19th- early 20th century features hand-hammered figural landscapes that create a historical narrative. The deep embossing or repoussé, and the hand-forming technique used in the making of this antique bowl are of note. The detailing of the ornate scrolls is exquisitely considered around the highly realistic figures. The figures have a surprising dimensionality; high quality silver works that have been hand-hammered like this one are a rare find. This bowl perhaps was once used as a silver presentation bowl during a special occasion- a script is found on the base that dates to 1903. The base reads: “Presented to Mr. and Mrs. Thompson, on the occasion of their wedding by the subalterns of the 79th C.I. ”

The 79th C.I. was the Carnatic Infantry regiment of the British Indian Army. After the three Anglo-Burmese Wars of the 19th century, Burma became a British Colony and was renamed Myanmar. This bowl is a remarkable piece of history. It is in great condition for its age, and a sure conversation started. Some of the high relief points on the bowl have been deeply hand-hammered that the silver has been broken through, this is part of the actual making of the piece as is not to be considered damage. This is not visible to the naked eye, and does not detract from its beauty- in fact, this shows the labor involved in this unique piece. The bowl is 11 cm high by 19 cm in diameter, or 4-1/2 inches tall by 6-3/4 inches wide. The bowl weighs 18.9 oz t.

Our punch service is decorated with the typical repoussé decoration attributable to Lucknow. Wilkinson quotes H. R Neville of the Gazeteer of India who, writing in 1904 indicates that the ‘hunting pattern’ took precedence on the original ‘jungle pattern’. He further praises the high craftsmanship of the Lucknow silversmiths before the turn of the 20th century despite a lower gauge of silver (Wynyard Wilkinson, Indian Silver, 1858-1947, London 1999, pp.125-129).

This set is decorated with scenes that appear to belong to the earlier ‘jungle pattern’ mentioned above. The bowls are executed in the typical Lucknow style with high relief and bold figures and landscapes (ibid 1999, p.127).

For comparable repoussé bowls and vessels with hunting patterns dated circa 1880 or 1890 see Wilkinson ibid., pp. 128, 135-136. Wilkinson also writes that the Lucknow silversmiths were very apt at copying themes form other Indian regions such as Kashmir, Kutch or Madras.

The inscriptions contain verses from Sa’di’s Gulistan, followed by a date:

har chih ravad bar saram chun tu pasandi rava[st]
bandah chih da‘va kunad hukm-i khuda [rast]

“Whatever happens to me is correct since you [ie. God] have approved it,
How can the slave dispute it? God’s command is right.”

mihtari dar qabul-i farman ast
tark-i farman dalil-i haraman ast

“Greatness is in accepting commands,
Ignoring them is the sign of the excluded.”

har kih sima-yi rastan darad
sar-i khidmat bar astan darad 1084

“Whoever bears the sign of the righteous,
Places the head of service upon the threshold. 1084 (1673-4).”

On the inside of the bowl, the inscriptions around the centre includes a further couplet from the Gulistan of Sa‘di:

ta dil-i dustan bi-dast ari
bustan-i pidar furukhtah bih

“In order to gain the hearts of friends,
Sell even the garden of your father.”

In the centre is an owner’s inscription:

sahihubu khw[a]jah (?) wali bin (?) haji …

“Its owner, Khwajah (?) Wali bin Haji … ”
