Buddhism flourished during the Qing dynasty, and was encouraged by the devotion of the Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong emperors and their successors. As a result of its popularity, the production of Buddhist statuary, ritual objects, vessels and other implements became widespread, and a variety of materials were employed in their manufacture. Several examples of jade buddhas produced around this period are known.

A small jade Amitayus (7.7 cm. high), is illustrated in Monarchy and Its Buddhist Way, Tibetan-Buddhist Ritual Implements in the National Palace Museum, National Palace Museum, Taiwan, 1999, no. 29. See a smaller (13.6 cm.) white jade seated Buddha dated to the mid-Qing dynasty, in the collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated by Yang Boda in Chinese Jades Throughout the Ages, Hong Kong, 1997, no. 103. A slightly larger (21 cm.) seated white jade figure of Pindola, formerly in the Nott Collection, is illustrated in Chinese Jades in the Stanley Charles Nott Collection, West Palm Beach, 1942, pl. XII, where it is dated to the Jiaqing period. A larger white jade Buddha (23.5 cm.) from the Stephen Junkunc III collection, with very similar features to the present example, was sold at Christie’s New York, 26 March 2010, lot 1104.

狀況報告
We have sought to record changes in the condition of this piece acquired after its initial manufacture.
– There are some minute surface nicks and nicks to the edges, rims and on the ushnisha.
– Two holes are drilled on the base.
– There are a polished chip and a few small chips, some of them polished, to the foot rim.
– There are natural russet inclusions within the stone.
– There are natural flaw lines within the stone.
– The base with a small concave section which is a natural flaw within the stone, measuring approx. 4.5 cm. long, possibly slightly polished.
– The stand with a few small chips to the edges.
There is general age-related surface wear as can be expected.

此拍品取材於青白玉整料，溫潤細膩，光澤油亮。菩薩頭戴寶冠，腦後有火焰紋頭光，彎眉闊鼻，下顎豐滿，雙耳垂肩，給眾生以慈悲安詳之感。上身著寶衣，衣紋流暢，腰間綬帶打結，自然下垂於膝前。菩薩左手施降魔印，右手施禪定印，全跏趺坐於蓮花座上，更顯莊嚴寶相，有悲憫天下之感。全像玉質華美，雕工精細，堪為佛教藝術瑰寶。來源：歐洲藏家珍藏

玉佛面相庄严，眼睑微合，直鼻小口，大耳垂肩。身躯圆润饱满，肩宽腰细， 臂膀硕实，双手交迭，结禅定印并置腹前。身着宽松裙袍，裙袍衣褶圆转流畅，双足交脚，全跏趺坐，下承仰覆莲木座。此件玉佛，宝相祥和慈悲，顶部与身躯的光素打磨或许与当初搭配其它材质的装饰组合有关，不排除其背后原应有鎏金背光的可能，或许当初应配有青铜鎏金背光，乃宫廷供佛的珍贵造像。此类以玉佛为主体的多媒材佛像，多半是清宫佛龛上的皇家供佛，故属珍稀。查阅玉佛相关造型，北京故宫藏有一青玉坐佛；美国纽约著名收藏家DR ARTHUR SACKLER（沙可乐），亦有一件与是件白玉坐佛极为相似的雷同珍藏。

There are two russet veins in the stone, which may or may not be original, and the one that goes through the right knee appears to have some kind of filler. There are two small holes drilled in the base for attachment. Nicely carved and has an attractive polish.

Buddha is shown seated in padmasana with hands resting atop the feet where they hold an oblong dish supporting a lingzhi and a lotus. He wears layered robes and a jeweled necklace, and his hair is carved in rows of curls below the usnisha.
