Scratch and worn gilding on the leading side, but otherwise excellent colour fine flat chasing, good marks.

Thomas Jenkins

This tazza is finely chased with figures in a Chinese landscape. This type of ornament was briefly popular in the 1680s and may have been the work of a single workshop in London that decorated wares obtained from other goldsmiths.

Inscription: Cut on flat edge of foot: lll

Marking: [1] Leopard’s head crowned (London assay office mark);
[2] Lion passant guardant (English quality mark for sterling);
[3] e in pointed shield (London date letter for 1682–83);
[4] TI, two escallop shells between, hinges together (maker’s mark for Thomas Jenkins).

[1]–[4] On flat of top surface near lower edge of the pictorial compostition;
[2] inside pedestal part of foot
